After a long wait iPhone X is on the market at last. So how is the iPhone X? Let’s check it out. The main difference between iPhone X and the previous generation is the display. Apple has at long last, brought an edge-to-edge display. Not just this but iPhone X has an OLED panel which has a resolution of 2436 x 1125 and the pixel density is 458 PPI Being an OLED panel, there is a marked difference in colour contrast and the colours really do ‘pop’ Alongside this, the blacks are deeper and OLED panels consume less electricity than IPS-LCD panels.
With it being an edge-to-edge display, this phone does not have a bottom chin, which looks very beautiful but there is a notch at the top which houses some sensors, front camera, and ear-piece.
Everyone has different opinions on this Some people did not like it at all, but I don’t have any major issues with it, Just some minor issues such as many apps have not been updated for the notch yet and in these apps, instead of the wedge you get black borders on the top and bottom. But with time, as apps get updated this issue will get resolved.
Another minor issue is that the native video size is the same as the iPhone 7 and there are black bars on both sides and if you zoom in to fill the screen, you see the notch and the video gets cropped from the top and bottom. But this aspect ratio issue is found on most bezel-less phones now. Overall, I really liked the display on this phone.
The Home button has been removed from the iPhone X and now to get to the Home screen you need to swipe upwards for notifications, you need to swipe down from top-left and for control center, you need to swipe down from top right and a curved swipe for switching between apps Because there is no bottom bezel in iPhone X. Apple has removed the fingerprint sensor from it and now apart from using a passcode your only other option is to use Face-ID but Apple’s facial recognition is very different from other phones. The notch on the top of the display has a dot projector which projects infrared dots on your face and an infrared sensor that senses these dots and maps a 3D model of your face. That is why, you cant trick this phone with a picture of someone, which you can do with some other phones.
In my usage, Face-ID worked very smoothly, just looking at the phone unlocks it and I feel that the fingerprint sensor even misread sometimes but Face ID has worked pretty much every time. Along with Face ID, iPhone X has introduced Animojis This, using the iPhone X facial recognition system, tracks your face, and lets you record animated messages and share them with your friends.
Apple’s build quality, its materials, and design are very good. iPhone X now has glass on the back, and according to Apple, this is the strongest glass on any phone right now. Volume Up and Down and Silencer switch are on the left side SIM Card tray and Screen On/Off button is on the right side and on the bottom are the mic, lightning port and the bottom firing one of the dual speakers. This phone is extraordinary in terms of looks and to hold You feel that it’s a top-notch premium phone but because it is glass, surely it will be less durable.
the performance which is this phone’s strongest trait. iPhone X has Apple’s A11 Bionic Processor. According to our benchmark testing results, Apple’s A11 Bionic processor not only leaves Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 miles behind, this processor is now in Intel Core i5 territory. Yes, this is a phone which is providing desktop level power. Apple has also put a neural engine in this processor which aids it in facial recognition and augmented reality applications, which will become more prevalent as time passes.
Alongside this, the phone has 3GB RAM and 64GB and 256GB storage options. As always, there are no dual-SIM support or storage expansion options.
iPhone X has a 7 MP selfie shooter and on the back are 12 MP dual sensors of which one is a wide-angle lens and the other is a telephoto lens and both lenses have optical image stabilisation this phone has 4K 60 fps video recording and slow-motion video is in Full HD and goes up to 240 fps. As always this iPhone also has very solid camera performance The camera has a very good dynamic range and colour reproduction is realistic. In my opinion, photos taken with Apple phones are more realistic than those from competitor phones and don’t look over saturated. That is why among phone cameras, I like iPhone’s camera the most.
iPhone X Camera has another feature which is called portrait lighting with which, while taking a picture, you can apply different lighting effects. Personally, I did not use this feature much but those people who like taking selfies will probably like it.
Apple has not disclosed the size of this phone’s battery but according to Apple, this phone will last two hours longer than iPhone 7 Alongside this, iPhone now has Qi wireless charging which Samsung has had for years but better late than never. Alongside this, iPhone X is fast charging capability and with a fast charging capable charger, which does not come in the box, you can charge around 50% in half an hour. On a full charge, the phone will easily last a day and if your use is heavy, you may have to top up during the day.
So is the iPhone X for you or not? I think iPhone X is for those people who like Apple phones, are Apple enthusiasts or those people who want the latest phone for everyday use and are prepared to pay a heavy price. No doubt, iPhone X is a very good phone and maybe the best phone of 2017 but its price tag is very high.
USD 999 means that in India, the cheapest version of iPhone X will be for around Rs.120,000. Being an iPhone 6S Plus user, I think it would have been better if instead of iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, Apple had announced iPhone X and X Plus. But then to buy the iPhone X Plus, I would have had to sell my other kidney as well.
